Practice

Structure before decoration.

Three kinds of information work, scoped around the material and its reader.

01 / Choose a comparison that serves the question.
Data graphics

A table does not always need a chart, and a chart does not always need more detail. The work starts by identifying the important comparison and the definitions behind it. Direct labels, units and explanatory notes help the reader use the visual without guessing.

Suitable source material includes approved example data, its definitions and the intended publication context. Data cleaning, statistical analysis and factual verification need explicit responsibility. The visual design does not certify that a source dataset is accurate or suitable for a decision.

02 / Make the relationship visible.
Explainer diagrams

A diagram can show a route, a set of relationships or a sequence that is difficult to follow in prose. The aim is to establish a reading order and distinguish the main path from supporting information. A useful visual can make both the overall structure and the next step apparent.

Bring the process as it is understood, the audience and the question the explanation must answer. A commissioned diagram needs review by someone who can confirm the source process. This service describes visual explanation, rather than operational approval or a compliance assessment.

03 / Help the first read and the closer read.
Report layouts

Report design gives headings, supporting evidence, captions and long-form passages distinct roles. A page system can make a summary easy to locate while allowing a reader to inspect the detail. The work can cover a short document or a defined set of layouts within a longer report.

The brief identifies page formats, supplied copy, charts, accessibility needs, editing tools and the final handover. Writing, research, translation and source-data verification are separate unless expressly agreed. Review stages should include both the content owner and the person responsible for publication.
